Shirehouse Farm is an Urban Farm located in Madison Wisconsin. Run by Steve and Cindy Colombo we founded the farm with our front yard vegetable garden when we bought our house in 2007. Since then we have added fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, meat rabbits, bees and expanded the gardens.
Steve is a Veterinary Technician with a love for heritage livestock and old farming practices. All of our chickens are heritage breeds and we are chaffing at the city’s limit of 4 birds per household. He is in charge of the meat rabbits and the bees.
I love my chickens! I really, really, do. It is a bit scary actually. I love my gardens, cooking, baking, canning and preserving the harvest and knitting, spinning, and weaving. I have been able to take a break from my career in research at the University of Wisconsin to get the farm going and am enjoying having the time to concentrate on learning more skills and expanding the farm.
The new adventure is body care products, some using eggs from my girls and honey and beeswax from Steve’s bees.
It is a day in the life of an urban farm!
